"German prisoners handling baled hay for American mules"Из писем автора: "Yesterday we put in some of the time getting supplies from the U. S. A. Quartermaster at our Camp on the far side of the Golden Horn. There were a number who wished to go, and so they gave me one of the Hups to cart the bunch out. My but it seemed natural and pleasant to get hold of a car again. Driving here is no easy matter. The roads are steep and some of them exceedingly rough. When mud is added it makes the proposition interesting. It rained yesterday, and so we had the mud. When we got out to the camp we found an interesting and busy place. A transport was unloading at a dock, and mule teams were hauling supplies to the great warehouses - built originally I am told for the Baldwin Locomotive works. Here and there prisoners were at work—some of the Germans who had twice been taken - once by the Russians and again by the Czechs. They tell me that these chaps are tickled to be used by the Americans because they get decent treatment and much better food than they have been getting. They did not look especially unhappy: but it was raining and they did look wet. One wondered how they kept from freezing at night - for already heavy underwear and overcoats feel good here.""Tuesday some of us had to make another trip out to the Quartermaster’s. We went in one of the Y Hups early in the morning. While we were doing the inevitable waiting there for supplies to be broken out of the stores, we amused ourselves watching the German prisoners at work - and got some pictures of them. They were unloading and transferring a lot of American baled hay which is here for our mules. Some of the candidates for that luscious fare were hauling it about in big army wagons. It was good to see them. The soldier guarding the Fritzies was an Irishman from Chicago who spoke english as she is butchered. We amused ourselves talking to him and the prisoners, all of whom are clad in odds and ends of old uniforms, sacks, blankets etc., presenting a strange and ludicrous sight."
